SCS Indoor Advantage

SCS Indoor Advantage certification measures the amount of toxins a product releases once it is placed in its new space. Think of “new car smell”. That’s the leather or vinyl releasing elements into the environment which might be toxic for humans if inhaled. Because your furniture is in an enclosed environment, SCS Indoor Advantage lets you know that the product will not negatively affect your indoor air quality. This certification is an equivalent to Greenguard and helps contribute to LEED certification.

Cradle to Cradle

Cradle to Cradle certification is based on the idea that most consumer products today are cradle to grave (create, use, landfill), but that there needs to be an alternative. This means using environmentally safe and healthy materials; design for material reutilization, such as recycling or composting; the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency; efficient use of water, and maximum water quality associated with production; and instituting strategies for social responsibility.

Lifecycle Assessment

Though there is no recognized certification for lifecycle assessment, Steelcase puts its products through a LCA process to make sure that products are sustainable from the extraction of materials, through production, transportation, use, and at end of life.

Recycled Content/Recyclability

Recycled content has become increasingly important to consumers and our products contain a high percentage of recycled aluminum, plastic, and steel whenever possible. It’s also important to look for products that are easily recyclable at end of life so that the products you buy today, can supply the raw materials for tomorrow.

LEED Certification

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) refers to a building certification from the USGBC which certifies that a space or building has been constructed using environmentally friendly materials and practices. Steelcase products can help to attain some of the points involved in being awarded LEED certification.
